unDecision
Grace Under Pressure
Can you make a decision when everything is on the line?
General Definition of unDecision
An unDecision results when an individual or company fails to make a conscious decision on a course of action, thereby forfeiting their ability to predict or choose their preferred outcome.
A person makes an unDecision when they are unwilling or unable to choose between possible options, thereby relegating themselves to the easiest course of action - even when it directly conflicts with their best interests.
Social Media Definition of unDecision
An individual or company's failure to consciously decide how to take advantage of available social media tools (e.g. website, blogs, communities) to participate in public conversations about their brand, image, and products or services. Such a failure to be proactive results in a concrete disadvantage to the individual or company who must now react to situations that are no longer under their control. The bottom line however, is that the situations *are* no longer under their complete control, and in addition to coming to terms with the changes, they need to learn how to use them to their company's advantage.
Companies in particular also need to realize that unlike the "old days", marketing has become a two-way conversation. Word-of-Mouth, Brand Evangelism, and Social Communities really drive how society (their customers) perceive their products, and ultimately their company.
When companies try to force-feed ideas, brands, and strategies (etc) to their audience it results in further damage to their reputation and ultimately their bottom line and ROI. and the sooner companies acknowledge this fact and learn to go with the flow, the sooner they will begin to reap the positive benefits that come from a two-way conversation between themselves and their customers.
Learning how to join the conversation is crucial to success with social media.
